Juniors give Seniors all they want
June 10, 2008
WASHINGTON — One upset and another close call both had one thing in common Monday night.
Indiana’s Juniors came to play and play hard. And it would be hard to argue the notion that they outhustled their Senior counterparts.
But the Junior boys could not hold on to a four-point lead with 1:03 to go, and the Seniors rustled a 93-91 victory in the Hatchet House.
South’s Jordan Hulls logged a team-high 29 minutes at point guard for the Juniors, while Edgewood’s Garrett Butcher played 12 minutes in relief for the Seniors.
In the opener, Alex Bentley of Ben Davis poured in 27 points as the Junior girls, coached by South’s Larry Winters, beat the Seniors, 86-80.
Even without two of the best juniors in the state, Winters said this is a deep class that’s short on height but big on skills. Sometimes, that’s just the sort of team that will do well in an all-star setting.
“The experience has been great, to get to see arguably some of the best girls in the state on one team,” Winters said. “It’s been a pleasure. I think the girls have really handled the adversity handed to them because of the weather conditions.
“We didn’t get to practice until today, but they came out and played their butts off and defended well. They did a good job.”
The Senior squad included North grad Alex Guyton and Indiana signee Lindsay Enterline of Heritage.
“It let us know we’ve got a lot more work to do,” Guyton said.
“No. 1, I think they need to play better team defense,” Winters said. “And they need to play harder.”
The Senior boys almost suffered the same fate, but rebounded in time.
“They played more physical and a lot better than we thought,” said the Butler-bound Butcher, who had four points and two rebounds. “Last year, the juniors were getting beat by 20 points, so we thought we’d come out and do the same thing. And that was not going to happen.
“But we battled back and showed some toughness in doing that.”
Hulls, who is headed to Indiana, filled up the stat sheet with eight points, nine rebounds, five assists and two steals in front of about 1,500.
“It was a fun game with a great atmosphere,” Hulls said. “Unfortunately, I had a couple of turnovers at the end that hurt us. But we were playing hard.
“I thought I was solid. There were some things I could have done better, but I did what I needed to do. Nothing special, just playing my game.”
Hulls had some special moments, diving off the floor for a loose ball and batting if off a Senior for a turnover with 6:08 left and his team up 70-68. Next trip, he converted a three-point play for a 73-70 lead in the midst of Franklin Central’s Patrick Bade blowing up for the Juniors with 19 of his 24 points in the last 10 minutes.
Hulls was also matched up with Carmel’s Daniel Moore, a future Hoosier teammate, for parts of the game.
I’ve known Daniel for a long time,” Hulls said. “He’s a hard-nosed kid, and I’m excited to be playing with him at IU.”
Butcher was out there with two other future Butler teammates, but is struggling right now, he said, with the two squads set to meet in Marion on Wednesday.
“I didn’t play well in the Hickory game and I haven’t played as well as I’m capable of in practice all week,” Butcher said. “That’s why my minutes are short. Then, it’s tough to find your groove.”
The Seniors rallied from down 87-83 with 1:03 left, hitting 5-of-6 free throws, the missed one was stuck back, to go up 91-87 with 25 seconds left.
A 3 by junior Colt Ryan of Batesville made it 91-90. Alex Young of Indy Northwest, who had 24 points, split a pair with nine seconds left. Ryan was fouled with eight seconds left but made just one of two.
Then Chase Stigall of New Castle made 1 of 2 with six seconds left for the seniors and Ryan’s 3-pointer at the buzzer was short.
Mr. Basketball Tyler Zeller of Washington finished with 19 points, 15 rebounds and four blocks, while Stigall had 15 points. Ryan had 15 for the Juniors.
In the girls’ game, Guyton finished with 13 points and a team-high 10 rebounds. She also had two blocks and two assists. Enterline had five points on 5-of-9 free-throw shooting.
“Enterline is a great young lady,” said Senior coach Kem Zolman of Wawasee. “Indiana is getting a quality kid. She has good quickness, a great first step.
“I’ve spent so little time with Alex I’ll save my opinion. She’s a neat kid. But we want her to be more aggressive. She led us in rebounds, but she could own the boards even more so.”
The Seniors jumped out to a 19-9 lead only to see the Juniors claw back and go up 38-35 with two minutes left in the first half. But Miss Basketball, Brittany Rayburn of Attica who had a team-high 15 points, fueled a 6-0 run that led to a 41-38 halftime edge.
The Seniors came out strong in the second half and the lead peaked at 62-51 with 12 minutes left before the Juniors rallied again.
Guyton picked up her fourth foul with 9:50 to go at the tail end of a 10-4 string by the Juniors. Guyton returned with 6:31 to go but was called for her fifth a minute later. Soon after, a 3 by Bentley tied it at 75 and her breakaway with 1:58 left put the Juniors up, 82-79.
“Alex can take over a game on both ends,” Winters said. “And she’s a leader. She had no practice time with us at all.”
The Seniors shot 38.6 percent, but made just 3 of 19 3-pointers and 23 of 37 free throws.
“This gets us well prepared this is what this game is all about.” Zolman said. “No one will remember this. We just have to come back Wednesday with the right attitude.”
“We have to find out what kind of heart it’s going to take when the other team wants it more and plays harder.”
The Indiana-Kentucky All-Star series will take place in Indianapolis on Friday and in Louisville, Ky. on Sunday.
