H-T All-Area Boys’ Team
Butcher unanimous choice for Player of the Year
With little left to say about Garrett Butcher’s storied career at Edgewood we’ll simply add one more sentence: He is our unanimous choice as the Herald-Times Boys’ Basketball Player of the Year based on voting by the sports staff.
The record-setting, 6-foot-7, Butler-bound forward leaves as Monroe County’s all-time career scoring leader (1,820) after scoring 635 points this season. He averaged 24.4 points and 9.3 rebounds and set a school record (one of 60 he owns) with a 43-point outburst against South Vermillion while leading the Mustangs to a 23-3 season and a return trip to regionals.
Mr. Basketball candidate was named All-Western Indiana Conference, first-team All-State by AP and among the Top 15 Seniors by the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association. Academic All-State by IBCA as well. By the way, he also accomplished the rare feat of being named to four H-T All-Area teams, the last three as a first-teamer.
And while we’re at it, we’ll make Edgewood head man Jay Brown the H-T’s Coach of the Year as well with South’s J.R. Holmes also getting strong consideration.
Brown took a team that lost seven seniors and molded another big winner that stayed near the top of the 3A poll all season had the Mustang Corral packed for every home game.
